Appeal

Dr. YAKIN ERTURK,
UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women
Your Excellency

I appeal to you to demand that the government of Israel immediately and unconditionally releases Hana Al-Shalabi from Jenin who was kidnapped and put into administrative detention in 2009. She has been held in Hasharon Prison in Israel for two years without charge or trial and without knowing the reason for her detention.
Her trial has been repeatedly delayed without legal justification and she has been denied contact with her family since her incarceration.
The practice of administrative detention has been condemned by prisoner rights groups around the world.
The UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON THE QUESTION OF PALESTINE (United Nations Office at Vienna, 7 and 8 March 2011) addressed The urgency of addressing the plight of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons and detention facilities. The paper is a searing indictment of Israeli violations of its obligations to prisoners under International Law and International Humanitarian Law. The conditions under which Palestinian women are detained are illegal and inhumane.

At a recent World Health Organisation  (WHO) meeting, sixty five countries voted in favour of a resolution condemning the deteriorating health of Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails.
It is of great concern that PM Netanyahu has recently intensified the punishments and suppression of Palestinian prisoners.

I urge you to use your good offices to further demand from the Government of Israel prompt implementation of international treaties and accords that protect rights and health conditions of prisoners in the occupied Palestinian territories and in Israel.

Sincerely
