H.E. CATHERINE ASHTON,
EU High Representative of the European Union
for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
On 31 July 2014, The EU Council made the ‘unavoidable’ decision to adopt restrictive measures i.e. economic, financial and arms sanctions against Russia for ‘destabilising the situation in eastern Ukraine’ in its push to annex the Crimea and for supplying the Ukrainian rebels with weaponry.
I strongly urge the EU to,
- apply the same standards to Israel for its irrefutable war crimes that have claimed the lives of 1600 (and rising) defenceless innocent Palestinian civilians as well as over 10,000 injured people and half a million displaced persons trapped in Israel’s illegal blockade where every inch of Gaza is unsafe.
- apply the same standards to the USA for providing heavy weaponry to Israel to maintain Israel’s assault on Gaza. This has been criticised by the UN Human Rights Commissioner, Navi Pillay, "They [USA] have not only provided the heavy weaponry which is now being used by Israel in Gaza, but they've also provided almost $1bn in providing the Iron Domes to protect Israelis from the rockets attacks," she said.
"No such protection has been provided to Gazans against the shelling."
The EU must execute the same ‘strong warning’ to Israel’s PM Netanyahu and President Obama of the USA.
You yourself stated “The recent tragic escalation of hostilities underlines the unsustainable nature of the status quo in Gaza and the need to address the humanitarian and socio-economic situation there without further delay.”
The Israeli hostilities against Gaza would end without further delay with the immediate implementation of EU sanctions.
With the heartbreaking deaths of over 300 Gaza’s children and the ongoing pain now suffered by hundreds more of maimed, injured and traumatised children in Gaza’s overcrowded hospitals, decent people of the world will no longer tolerate the heinous double standards of the EU, UN and world governments on the matter of Palestine.
