H.E. NAVENETHEM PILLAY,
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,
Your Excellency
On 15 May 2011, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) used excessive force to disperse participants in peaceful demonstrations commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the Palestinian Naqba on the Israeli borders at Maroun al Ras, Lebanon, the Golan Heights, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
12 unarmed protestors were killed and hundreds wounded.
May 15 marks the anniversary of the Palestinian al-Naqba or “catastrophe”. The Zionist state of Israel was founded through a terror campaign triggering one of the largest forced migrations in modern history from 530 ethnically-cleaned Palestinian villages and other urban areas.
More than 100,000 Palestinian refugees whose families were forced to flee to Lebanon 63 years ago arrived at Maroun Al-Mas. 10 Palestinians were killed by Israeli snipers and more than 120 wounded, some critically. None of the demonstrators had weapons. Those murdered were all civilians from the camps and were shot in cold blood as they nonviolently placed Palestinian flags at the fence and gave the peace and victory sign.
Palestinians from Syria’s 10 Palestinians camps arrived at the Golan Heights where 2 unarmed Druze protestors were shot by the IOF.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly defended the violence. “Everyone should know that we are determined to protect our borders and our sovereignty.” of Israel and it succeeded in doing so.” In reality, Israel invaded Syria’s Golan Heights in 1967 and later illegally annexed the territory. Its “sovereignty” over the area is not internationally recognised.
IOF used excessive force to disperse participants in peaceful Naqba demonstrations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. As a result, 144 Palestinian civilians, including 47 children, 5 women and 4 children, were wounded. In the Gaza Strip, 105 people were wounded, including 31 children, 3 women and 3 journalists. In the West Bank, 38 civilians were wounded, including 16 children, 2 women and a journalist.
I call on you to immediately
· take action to compel the Israeli government to stop its systematic crimes against Palestinian civilians.
- ensure proper investigation of the alleged violations by Israeli Occupation Forces, and bring to justice anyone found responsible in fair trials.
Sincerely
